Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez
and Lorenzo H. Zambrano, Chairman and CEO of CEMEX.

Monterrey, Mexico.- September 2nd, 2003.- CEMEX
and the Iberian-American New Journalism Foundation (FNPI) today
awarded the winners and finalists of the CEMEX-FNPI New Journalism
Prize. The award recognizes and encourages journalism in Latin
America. Lorenzo H. Zambrano, Chairman and CEO of CEMEX, and Gabriel
Garcia Marquez, Nobel laureate and Chairman of FNPI presented
the award.

Garcia Marquez also awarded Homage to Jose Salgar, as a special
recognition granted by the Award Council.
Salgar has been a journalist for 70 years and a teacher of countless
generations of Colombian journalists, including Garcia Marquez
himself.
The award ceremony took place at Monterrey's Museum of Contemporary
Art (MARCO).

The award was created by CEMEX and FNPI to promote journalistic
excellence in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Homage award winner is granted US$30,000.00. The winners
of the TV, radio and internet wards will receive US$25,000.00,
and the finalists in each category are granted US$5,000.00. The
awards are fully sponsored by CEMEX.
