CEMEX in Austria will supply 540,000 cubic meters of ready-mix concrete for the construction of the Koralm rail tunnel, the centerpiece of the railway connecting the states of Styria and Carinthia in southern Austria. The tunnel of approximately 32.9 kilometers will constitute Austria’s longest railway tunnel, and one of the longest traffic tunnels in the world.

The Koralm railway is an extension of the trans-European corridor connecting the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas, and this tunnel will enable a significant reduction in travel time between Northern and Southern Europe. Following an elaborate in-depth analysis of geological conditions, two 9.93-meter-diameter boring machines have begun digging the central section of the tunnel. Running at depths of up to 1,250 meters below ground, the process requires on-site, ongoing optimized support based on observed ground conditions.

To meet the just-in-time requirements of this massive project, CEMEX, together with a supply partner, installed a mobile ready-mix plant at the tunnel entrance. This powerful plant is capable of delivering all types of concrete and specialty products as needed. CEMEX’s expertise and vast experience in tunnel projects has been leveraged for such special processes such as filling mortars and sprayed concrete for shotcreted tunnel sections. The jobsite will run 24 hours per day and 365 days per year and require very high ready-mix concrete volumes in short time frames.
