CEMEX provides innovative building solution for first public/private wind farm in France

Date published: December 19, 2013

CEMEX in France supplied 1,949 cubic meters of ready-mix concrete for the first wind farm operated by an association between private and public entities in France. The Clamecy-Oisy wind farm in the Nièvre department of the Burgundy region of France will turn Nièvre into a positive energy zone that covers its local needs with its own renewable energy production. Upon completion, each of its six turbines will have a capacity of 2.05 megawatts for an annual production of 27,500 megawatt hours—equal to the electric power consumption of 12,000 people

CEMEX provided two types of concrete for each of the massive turbine foundations: 35 cubic meters of binding concrete for the seat and almost 290 cubic meters of structural concrete for the base. Systematically checked for consistency and strength, both the binding and base concrete ensured fluidity compatible with the size and density of the foundation’s reinforcements. Since the concrete foundations were buried, CEMEX used specialty cement designed to withstand a moderately aggressive chemical environment.

CEMEX mobilized 20 mixer trucks for high volume pouring. Using a mobile concrete pump, the company poured the bases at a rate of up to 35 cubic meters per hour. Working with an experienced contractor, the ready-mix concrete was poured, vibrated, and adjusted in only one month—awaiting the installation of the wind turbines, which are slated for commissioning no later than early 2014.

At a global level, CEMEX does not “simply manufacture concrete,” but develops solutions based on the thorough knowledge and application of concrete technology. Leveraging years of experience, a worldwide pool of knowledge, and state-of-the-art expertise about the different concrete constituents and their interaction, CEMEX offers its customers “concrete by design”—tailor-made concrete.
