CEMEX sponsors “Wings of Mexico” sculpture celebrating 20th anniversary of Mexico City-Berlin bilateral partnership

Date published: November 12, 2013

CEMEX in Germany organized the installation of the bronze “Wings of Mexico” sculpture by the internationally renowned Mexican painter and sculptor, Jorge Marín, outside the Mexican embassy in Berlin at a ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the German capital and Mexico City. Presented by the government of Mexico City to the city of Berlin, the sculpture symbolizes the overcoming of borders, the fraternal alliance between peoples and cultures, and the endeavor to go as far as fantasy allows.

Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, Mexico’s Ambassador to Germany, welcomed about 150 guests to the unveiling of the work of art and the ceremony that followed. The guests included a distinguished delegation from Mexico City, including the Minister for Economic Development and the Coordinator for International Affairs, prominent representatives from the city of Berlin, and the President of CEMEX in Germany, Eric Wittman.

“It was a pleasure for CEMEX to promote this cultural exchange between Mexico and Germany. In this respect, the anniversary of the city partnership provided us with an especially auspicious opportunity,” said Eric Wittman upon the receipt of a thank-you medal on behalf of the company.

The Berlin bronze “Wings” sculpture has international counterparts. Through the artist’s “8 cities, 8 cultures” project, Marín aims to bring his unifying works of art into eight capital cities around the world. In 2010, Marín installed a pair of wings at the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, and subsequently in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2012. These works of art in public spaces are a popular subject for tourists and locals alike. Representatives of Mexico’s embassy in Berlin are confident that this interactive sculpture will develop into a crowd pleaser as visitors can stand between the pair and have themselves photographed “with wings”.
