CEMEX launches new concrete tie design for construction of the London Underground

CEMEX designed, produced, and delivered the first new concrete railroad tie in over 30 years for the northwest Metropolitan Line track of the London Underground. A tailor-made solution, the company’s new sleeper design offers faster installation of new track with improved reliability and greater longevity.

CEMEX’s new high quality concrete tie is a major innovation developed in partnership with two global leaders in the railway engineering industry in response to a growing need to construct track faster, safer, and at a lower cost, with reduced maintenance requirements. Among its attributes, the advanced new preassembled tie incorporates the state-of-the art Pandrol Fastclip “FE” fastening system, which enables automated installation. The tie is also fitted with the required insulators and pads in place. This reduces five installation steps to just one as the ties arrive on site complete with all components ready to thread the rails onto the ties and automatically drive the fastener clips onto the rails.

The introduction of this innovative, tailor-made, preassembled concrete tie required extensive coordination across the entire process, from CEMEX design and production to installation. During the fitting of the first 900 ties, the new system proved twice as fast as previous installations on the London Underground network.
