CEMEX benefits over 5,000 children and their families through Food-for-Education program in Egypt

Date published: April 24, 2013

Started in the Assiut region in Upper Egypt, CEMEX’s innovative Food-for-Education project has improved the lives of more than 5,000 schoolchildren and members of their families over the past three years. Conducted in coordination with the World Food Program and the Egyptian Ministry of Education, the project has supported the government’s efforts to improve the quality of education by the year 2015—in line with the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

The project has covered over 114 community schools in the least privileged areas of Assiut. Throughout the school year, schoolchildren sponsored by CEMEX in Egypt under the program have received a daily snack fortified with iron and Vitamin A, which covers about 25% of the child’s daily nutritional needs. Take-home food supplies were also distributed monthly to the families of those students who attended school regularly, contributing to increased school enrollment. These take-home supplies were provided only to the families of those students who complete the minimum required attendance rate.

“CEMEX is committed to Egypt’s communities, this project has aimed to reduce poverty and food insecurity in Upper Egypt by investing in human potential through supporting access to basic education facilities to maximize children’s learning capacity. We believe that this project is enhancing the quality of education for future generations in Egypt” said Sergio Menéndez, President of CEMEX in Egypt.

CEMEX places a strong emphasis on social responsibility, based on a deep concern for the interests of all of its stakeholders. The company has established and contributed to numerous, far-reaching community development programs around the world.
