CEMEX participates in new eco-friendly hydroelectric power plant in the Austrian Alps

Date published: April 3, 2013

CEMEX in Austria is supplying 120,000 m³ of ready-mix concrete for the construction of a new eco-friendly hydroelectric power plant situated in a mountain cavern 1,600 meters above sea level — a height equivalent to nearly 4 times the Empire State Building — in the Alpine area of the Carinthian Mountains in southern Austria. The 385 million euro project, known as Reissek II, is expected to generate 430 MW of clean, renewable energy to the neighboring provinces of Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol.

A complex construction project at these impressive heights creates a series of logistical and technical challenges, chief among them harsh weather conditions that can reach -20 degrees Celsius in the winter. CEMEX’s experts in the application of concrete technology have been able to solve these building challenges while maintaining industry-leading quality control. Among the building solutions the company provided is 24 hour-shift operation from a specially installed mobile ready-mix plant located high on the mountain.

“We work closely with our customers to provide them with tailor-made building solutions for their most ambitious projects, even if this implies setting up the highest construction site in the Southern Alps in Austria. We are very proud to be part of this project that will improve the wellbeing of many Austrians,” said Markus Stumvoll, CEMEX Country President in Austria.

In addition, CEMEX is participating in the construction of the Hauptbahnhof central railway station in Vienna, one of the largest and most challenging construction sites in the country, the Nordspital in Vienna, one of Europe’s most modern hospitals, and the twin-track, 3.5-kilometer Pummersdorfer Tunnel aiming to relieve traffic congestion for all major Austrian Federal Railways.

CEMEX continually works to develop solutions to its customers’ increasingly complex challenges. Leveraging years of experience, a worldwide pool of knowledge, and state-of-the-art expertise, the company offers a growing array of tailor-made special concrete solutions to suit each customer’s distinctive needs.
