US$18.6 M waste heat-to-energy power plant to be built in CEMEX plant in the Philippines

Date published: March 20, 2012

CEMEX has reached an agreement with Chinese Sinoma Energy Conservation Ltd. to build a waste heat-to-energy (WHTE) facility. The 800 million Philippine peso (approx. 18.6 million US dollars) facility will be placed in CEMEX's Solid Cement plant in Antipolo city in the Philippines, and will have the capacity to capture the cement plant’s excess heat to produce usable electricity.

Under the contract signed in Beijing, China, Sinoma agreed to design, build, operate and manage the 6-Megawatt power plant. The facility is expected to mitigate the negative effects of power service interruptions, help reduce dependence to high-cost power sources, and reduce the plant’s carbon footprint.

“CEMEX is innovating ways to reduce operational costs, increase efficiency, and continue reducing our carbon footprint. This project is one of many that solidify our commitment to sustainable development,” says Joaquin Estrada, President of CEMEX Asia.

The Antipolo project is also a first of its nature outside China for Sinoma, and they hope to replicate it elsewhere in the world.

“This project is not only the first Waste Heat Recovery Investment Project which cooperates with CEMEX Group but also the first exploration of Chinese corporation investing the construction of waste heat recovery power station overseas. It is an important milestone of Sinoma-EC practicing “Go Out” strategy,” Mr. Zhang Qi, Sinoma EC Chairman said.

CEMEX continuously seeks to improve its performance as an efficient, agile, and innovative company by identifying, sharing, and implementing best practices across its global network of plants and facilities. The company’s industry-best processes allow it to satisfy the needs of its customers while using the optimal amount of resources, thus creating the most value.
