CEMEX delivers world-class building solutions for the construction of two major buildings in Düsseldorf and Cologne

Date published: February 24, 2012

CEMEX has provided materials for two major projects in Germany, the Double U building in Dusseldorf, and the new headquarters for chemical products company LANXESS in Cologne. In both projects, CEMEX used its expertise as one of the world’s foremost providers of building materials to comply with its customer’s requirements.

Double U Building

CEMEX delivered 17,265 square meters of prefabricated ceilings and 1,240 square meters of double wall elements fabricated with semi-finished precast reinforced ready-mix concrete for an office complex in Düsseldorf called the “Double U”. From the underground car park for 250 cars to the roof of the complex, the materials delivered contributed to reduce the construction period significantly.

The Double U building, as it is called because of its layout resembling two letters U joined at the base, is located within the Derendorf district, north of Düsseldorf city centre. CEMEX’s customer for this project is DoubleU Development GmbH, a joint venture of Rheinmetall Immobilien GmbH and developer Projektentwicklung GmbH.

The construction company built the complex using semi-finished precast reinforced concrete units from CEMEX. “We employed precast concrete elements due to time constraints. We expected to save one week of time per floor, in comparison with in-situ concrete construction,” explains project manager Architekt Klaus Klühspies.

LANXESS Headquarters

CEMEX is also supplying screed for the new LANXESS corporate headquarters and its 38,000 square metres of office space in the city of Cologne. The screed laying work was started in the new head office of the specialised chemical products company. Within the next five months, about 38,000 square metres of office space will be equipped with a hollow floor, including a bearing layer of calcium sulphate flow screed.

The materials are being supplied by CEMEX, on behalf of the contracting system flooring manufacturer Sybotec Gmbh, Frammersbach. Since the beginning of November 2011, the CEMEX plants of Langenfeld and Kerpen-Türnich have been producing calcium sulphate flow screed for the large construction site that will be concluded by March this year. A total of about 3,000 tons of screed mortar will be supplied.

At a global level, CEMEX does not “simply manufacture concrete”, but develops solutions based on the thorough knowledge and application of concrete technology. Leveraging years of experience, a worldwide pool of knowledge, and state-of-the-art expertise about the different concrete constituents and their interaction, CEMEX offers its customers “concrete by design”—tailor-designed concrete.
