Date published: November 15, 2011

CEMEX in Latvia’s Brocëni plant—technologically one of the most modern cement plants in Europe—recently celebrated its first full year of operations at full capacity. To commemorate this event, approximately 100 guests, including customers from its local and export markets of Estonia, Russia, and Belarus, enjoyed a Customer Day at the plant.

The honored guests participated in formal presentations, festive activities, and an open dialogue with management at what is expected to become an annual tradition for CEMEX to get closer to its customers.

Construction of the Broceni cement plant lasted from the summer of 2007 to the summer of 2010 and required and investment of 275 M Euros. The plant meets all international standards of environmental protection and can produce up to 1.6 M tons of cement per year. Among the various technological innovations of the plant is its dry kiln, which requires just about half of the thermal energy to produce clinker compared to the previous technology.

At a separate event, the Latvian Ministry of Environment chose the Brocëni plant as the best example of environmentally-friendly production to show to their colleagues from Lithuania. At a meeting of more than 20 representatives from the Latvian and Lithuanian Ministries of Environment, CEMEX management introduced them to the new technologies that enable the plant to not only be a leader in energy efficient production, but also be a leader in the use of alternative fuels.

The Latvian Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development concluded, “We are grateful to the company, the leading producer and a large investor in Latvia, for its participation in waste management and the extensive corporate social responsibility program that CEMEX pursues which targets biodiversity enhancement in Latvia.”

CEMEX fosters long-term relationships with its customers and communities. To this end, the company constantly works to provide environmentally friendly solutions for the challenges they face in their specific market.
