Restored CEMEX quarries in Spain yield record harvests

Date published: October 31, 2011

During the last summer months, over 1,300 tons of citric fruits and 200,000 kilograms of wine grapes were harvested from two restored CEMEX quarries in the Spanish cities of Alicante and Castillejo. The quarries, known as El Clotet and Yepes, are two examples of how responsible land management can have a positive environmental and economic effect.

El Clotet has been active for 26 years, and over that time period over 20,000 tons of citric fruits have been harvested. Comprised of 138 acres of restored quarries, the harvest of El Clotet will be sold as far as the United States, France, Italy, England, and Germany. The plantation achieved GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certification three years ago, in recognition of its production techniques, the quality of its installations, the safety of its workers, and respect for the environment.

The Yepes vineyard held its seventh harvest, and saw tremendous growth of 33% in comparison to last year’s harvest. The vineyard is one of many success stories of CEMEX's quarry restoration efforts throughout its operations around the world. The restoration project was one of the first of its kind in Spain, and it sought to transform the land into something that would contribute to the environment but also be economically sustainable. Today, the vineyard has 28 acres with 92,000 vines. This year's harvest will yield 200,000 kilograms of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot grapes, which will become bottles of wine under the "Viña Canterana" label. CEMEX's agriculture division experts have been tending to the vineyard all year long, and this bountiful harvest is a testament to their efforts.

CEMEX works diligently to responsibly manage the land within and around its operations. Worldwide, 85% of CEMEX’s active cement and aggregates sites have quarry rehabilitation plans in place, and is on track to reach its target of 100% by 2015.
