CEMEX in Germany supplies key pre-cast concrete elements for new pavilion of Cologne Sculpture Park

Date published: October 3, 2011

CEMEX in Germany recently completed the installation of 25 double wall pre-cast bright white concrete elements that compose the six faces of the striking 134-square-meter “Tree House” garden pavilion for the Skulpturenpark Köln in Cologne, Germany. With walls standing over six meters high, the roofless tree-filled pavilion was designed by noted Tokyo architect Sou Fujimoto for “KölnSkulptur #6,” the sixth open air exhibition of contemporary sculptures by internationally established artists at the park.

Each of the 25 wall elements consisted of two leaves of pre-cast reinforced concrete, almost seven meters high and 6.5 centimeters thick. The leaves varied in length from 3.69 to 12.70 meters and were joined together with latticed girders. The double wall elements, comprising a total of 333 square meters, were delivered standing horizontally in transport racks. At the construction site, the units were pivoted and mounted vertically, using a system developed by CEMEX to move such large-sized pre-cast concrete elements without risk of damage. The elements were then set in concrete at the site, creating a massive, imposing component.

“Here we had the opportunity to prove that the suitability of pre-cast concrete elements is not just restricted to standard structures within the housing, industrial, and commercial building sectors, but also serves the purpose of erecting architecturally unique structures, especially construction challenges,” concluded the managing director and the project manager for CEMEX in Germany, who contributed their know-how to this project.

CEMEX’s goal is to help its customers solve their building challenges—whenever and wherever they arise. To this end, the company tailors its products and services to suit its customers’ specific construction requirements.
