From spring 2010 until June 2011 CEMEX supplied over 80,000 m3 of ready-mix concrete for a tunnel near the southeastern Austrian city of Graz. The 60 million Euro project will benefit more than 20,000 motorists that transit the area every day.

Because of the challenging nature of the project, which includes over one kilometer of underground construction, CEMEX had to supply a specialty concrete known as shotcrete. Shotcrete is applied using a construction technique in which the material is conveyed through a hose and pumped pneumatically on a surface at a very high speed. This allows it to be used on any type or shape of surface, including vertical and overhead areas.

Using an on-site mobile ready-mix plant, CEMEX delivered shotcrete during the tunnel advance phase and tunnel inner shell concrete for the lining of the tunnel with a steel formwork.

As a leading provider of building materials in Austria, CEMEX provides its customers with the reliable, high-quality service and consistent product quality they demand. Through a country-wide network of 23 aggregates plants and 32 ready-mix plants, the company stands ready to deliver innovative solutions to their clients’ specific challenges whenever and wherever they are needed.
