CEMEX has been recognized with the 2010 Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award in the Economic Opportunity Category, given by the Association of American States (OAS) and the Trust for the Americas, for the positive social impact of its Centros Productivos de Autoempleo (Productive Self-employment Centers) program.

The award was announced on May 26, 2011 at the VIII Inter-American Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility in Asunción, Paraguay, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

This award encourages corporations to play a bigger role in developing solutions to overcome poverty throughout the Americas by recognizing a company that has initiated an innovative program which benefits the community in which it operates. The Economic Opportunities Category recognizes initiatives that have the primary goal of promoting economic opportunity for disadvantaged populations by means of providing employment opportunities and/or building micro-enterprises.

The Centros Productivos de Autoempleo (CPA) is a self-construction assisted program aimed for families that lack economic resources, but are willing to work, in which they can fabricate basic materials intended for the construction or expansion of their homes. CEMEX provides the necessary machinery and some building supplies, while the community contributes the labor. A portion of the materials fabricated are sold to finance the centers, while the rest is given to the families who worked at the center.

In her acceptance speech, CEMEX in Mexico’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Development Director, Martha Herrera, stated that the company follows the premise that in order to remain competitive, the Company must foster development and generate innovative and sustainable building solutions.

“As part of our commitment to sustainable development, we work to create inclusive projects in which the private sector, in partnership with the public sector and the community, contribute in the community’s transformation, where the community is the key player of its own development,” says Herrera.

In Mexico, CEMEX operates 36 Centers in seven states which have benefited 50,000 participants. The program has generated more than 25,000 temporary jobs and helped construct 369,000 square meters of housing. This program is being considered to be replicated in other countries of Latin America.

For the last 10 years, CEMEX’s social responsibility programs in Mexico have benefited more than 5 million people.
