CEMEX wins 2011 Green Enterprise IT Award for innovation at its Global Data Center

CEMEX has been named one of the winners of the 2011 Green Enterprise IT (GEIT) Awards given by the Uptime Institute. The company was given the award on May 11 at a ceremony held in Santa Clara, California. CEMEX was the winner in the Innovation category for Data Centers.

The Uptime Institute provides education, publications, conferences, seminars, and other services for the enterprise data center industry. The GEIT Awards are the highest honor given by the institute and are given to projects, ideas, and products that significantly improve energy productivity and resource use in IT. Companies from all over the world compete for these awards and winners are given a platform to present at the symposium in order to share their experiences and help spread best practices among the industry.

CEMEX was chosen as the winner of this award because of the development and implementation of its Smart Energy Management initiative at its Global Data Center in Monterrey, Mexico. The initiative consisted of 25 different steps implemented over eight months with the objectives of increasing energy efficiency, reducing energy expenses, reducing the carbon footprint of the data center, and increasing the overall sustainability of the IT function.

“At CEMEX, sustainable development is part of our day to day business and an integrated part of all our company. This project was aimed at making sure that our Global Data Center was not only aligned with our overall sustainability strategy, but that it was also one of the most efficient and innovative data centers in the world,” says Roberto Chaverri, CEMEX Vice President of Information Technology.

Through a four-part strategy that centered on hardware replacement, active energy management, infrastructure optimization, and facility improvement, CEMEX was able to achieve outstanding results in a short period of time. As a result of the Smart Energy Management initiative, CEMEX improved its energy efficiency at the Global Data Center by 61% as well as a 44% reduction in its CO2 footprint. In all, CEMEX will save 143,400 kilowatt hours a month thanks to this initiative.

At a global level, CEMEX is constantly evolving in order to become more flexible in its operations, more creative in its commercial offerings, more sustainable in its use of resources, more innovative in conducting its global business, and more efficient in its capital allocation.
