CEMEX in Germany provides concrete for emergency helicopter landing pad

Date published: March 10, 2011

A state-of-the-art helipad for a hospital in the city of Bad Soden near Frankfurt, Germany has been built using CEMEX’s high-strength ready-mix concrete. Although this looks like a steel structure, the strength and malleability of concrete makes it possible for it to rise as high as it does and support the weight of helicopter ambulances.

CEMEX has provided 800 square meters of floor slabs on the hospital grounds made with special reinforced concrete. Both steel and concrete were necessary to support such a massive, high load-bearing structure. The tower is 20 meters tall and has a 32.50 meter diameter concrete slab at its top.

Concrete is the most versatile building material available, and the company’s concrete technologists are able to modify the properties of concrete through the use of innovative chemical admixtures, combined with the proper proportions of the various concrete constituents. For example, depending on the type of application and jobsite requirements, CEMEX can design concrete that is more fluid, stronger, develops strength faster, and also retains workability longer.

CEMEX is a leading provider of building materials in Germany, one of Europe’s largest construction markets. With five cement plants, 41 aggregates quarries, and nearly 200 ready-mix concrete plants in the country, the company is never far from its customers.
