Date published: November 3, 2010

On October 28, 2010, CEMEX in the Dominican Republic invited local journalists to a seminar given by Mario Tascón, an award-winning journalist that has been at the vanguard of online publications for nearly two decades.

Mario Tascón

At his conference titled "Will tomorrow's newspapers be called newspapers?", Tascón spoke about the future of the media, comparing the media ecosystem of the recent past which was formed exclusively by the press, radio, and television, with today's media, which incorporates blogs, mobile devices, and relies almost exclusively on the internet. Over 80 journalists and other leaders of opinion were present at the event in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo.

Tascón has over 15 years of experience in digital media. In 1996 he launched the online edition of the daily El Mundo, which is one of the most prestigious online publications in Spain. In 2008 he created DixiMedia Digital, a company that develops digital media for the next generation of media consumers. DixiMedia hosts the blog 233grados.com, winner of The Bobs award for best Spanish-language blogs.

The seminar was part of the CEMEX's corporate social responsibility initiative to promote quality in the media and foster best practices in journalism. Chief among the company's many pro-journalism programs is the CEMEX+FNPI New Journalism Award, the most important journalistic recognition in Latin America.
