In November 2007, the Sid'r cyclone hit southern Bangladesh bringing with it a 15-foot tidal surge that battered the southern coast, displacing over three million people and causing an estimated 4,000 deaths. Villages were devastated, roads destroyed, and all communication systems were lost.

Since that tragic occurrence, CEMEX has been heavily involved in relief efforts. Nearly US$30,000 were donated by employees, US$ 6,000 of which were immediately dedicated to emergency rations, and the remaining amount was used to aid the Smiling Sun Franchise Program in the construction of the US$44,000 'Smiling Sun' Clinic in Bagerhat. CEMEX also donated 800 bags of cement to the clinic, which will provide maternal health, child health, reproductive health and various other related services for the people of the region.

"Our partnership to build this clinic is proof of our commitment to have a positive long-term impact on the communities affected by the tragedy. I want to express my deepest gratitude to our colleagues worldwide, for their generosity," says Jaime Ruiz de Haro, CEMEX Asia Region President.

The Smiling Sun Franchise Program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is committed to improving the quality of life of all Bengalis by providing affordable, quality health services.

The opening ceremony was attended by local Parliament member Alhaj Dr. Mozammel Hossain, Edwin P. Hufemia, CEMEX Country Director in Bangladesh, Juan Carlos Negrette, Chief of Party of the Smiling Sun Franchise Program, and Executive Director of CRC Mr. Ali Hossain Hawlader.
