Award-winning architect Carlos Ferrater uses CEMEX white concrete for architectural masterpiece

Date published: September 28, 2010

The Benidorm West Beach Promenade, located in Spain's Mediterranean coast, has become one of the country's most emblematic pieces of infrastructure, created with over 10,000 cubic meters of CEMEX white concrete. It is the work of noted architect Carlos Ferrater, winner of the 2010 National Architecture award in Spain and director of CEMEX's White Chair at Barcelona's Polytechnic University, who created the design along with architect Xavier Marti.

The promenade is one of the most highly-regarded works built in the past years; it has already been given nine different recognitions and awards worldwide. Most recently, the project was named as an International Architecture Award winner by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design.

The structure of the promenade evokes a cliff and the movement of the ocean waves in three layers: the first layer is a border line of white concrete; the second has various textures in different colors reminiscent of the works of Gaudi; and the last is composed of vanguard real estate where the different finishes of the pavement combine harmoniously with surrounding vegetation.

In order to produce white concrete, CEMEX uses its white cement, a highly specialized type of cement that is perfect for decorative purposes. Its strength and resistance is similar to that of grey cement, but its lack of pigment makes it ideal for mixing with colors, or using it as-is for stunningly-bright white finishes. There are many technical challenges involved in producing high-grade white cement, but CEMEX is one of the leading manufacturers of this product worldwide.

CEMEX in Spain chose the Benidorm Promenade as the subject of its latest Sustainable Development Report because it makes such good use of CEMEX's white concrete while at the same time respecting and enhancing its natural surroundings.

CEMEX is proud to have been a contributor to this great piece of architectural design and engineering execution.
